Margazhi Sarees at Pothys: Drapes for Dawn, Temple and Kutcheri

Margazhi begins before sunrise. In most Tamil homes it means a kolam at the doorstep by 5 am, Thiruppavai playing in the kitchen and a temple visit before work. In Chennai it also brings the December music season, with concerts in sabha halls every evening. In 2026 the month starts on 16 December and runs until the eve of Thai Pongal. Picking margazhi sarees means dressing for all of these hours, sometimes in one day.

Pothys traces its roots to Srivilliputhur, the temple town where Andal is said to have been born and where the Thiruppavai began. Its margazhi sarees run from soft Chettinad cotton sarees for early mornings to nine yards for temple rituals and pure silks for the concert stage.
