Before the Revolution: Khadi’s Ancient Roots

Long before it became a symbol of India’s independence, khadi was a humble, homegrown fabric, woven in villages for daily use. Spun on charkhas and woven on handlooms, it dates back to ancient times- traded during the Indus Valley era as well. It has been noted in multiple global texts. Handloom khadi cotton sarees​ are valued for their breathability and comfort in India’s climate. Khadi was an essential part of rural life, worn and woven across generations.

The Weaving Process of Khadi Cotton Sarees

The creation of khadi cotton sarees begins with the spinning of yarn using a traditional charkha. The cotton is first cleaned and carded before being spun into yarn manually. This yarn is then dyed using natural or low-impact dyes and transferred to the loom. The weaving itself is entirely manual, using wooden handlooms, where every weft is passed by hand. This time-intensive process results in slight variations in texture across the pallu- proof of its handcrafted origin.

Every brush, every pleat, and every wrap of a khadi cotton piece is imprinted with the energy and rhythm of its artisan and their hand. The handwoven nature of the fabric means it allows air to pass through easily, making it naturally breathable.
